The Avengers – and WHY you need to see it in the theater

It’s rare that I see movies in the theater – preferring to veg out with a big ol bowl of popcorn and my oversized jammie pants and my comfy couch instead – but occassionally, there comes a movie that you HAVE to see in the theaters… (And no – I’m not talking about Titanic in 3D.)

Marvel’s The Avengers falls into that category. and I’m not kidding.

In case you don’t know the story -

“Marvel’s The Avengers”—the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster.

and if your eyes glazed over reading that… bear with me.

The casting on this movie – for starters -could NOT be more perfect – I think they finally got it right by casting Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk (no offense to Edward Norton)… and OF COURSE Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man? Yes Please – might have stolen the show for me… I even loved Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow

Joss Whedon definitely knows his stuff and did NOT disappoint in this one either.

I had the priveledge of seeing this in 3D – as it should be… and I can’t imagine not enjoying it in the theater. Aside from the benefit from 3D cinematography, there is an energy that was palpable as the entire theater would gasp or burst into laughter or cheer and clap in near unison. Another reason why you should make this a date night excursion.

I really didn’t have any expectations when I walked in to the theater – well, except that I figured it would be decent seeing as how the line for the pre-screening literally wrapped around the building on a Wednesday evening… I was on the edge of my seat through the entire movie.

I’ve heard some say that there were slow parts – I musta missed those. I don’t have any complaints really… although a die-hard Marvel expert may have a different opinion.

A side note of “nerd Humor” you may appreciate – Robert Downey Jr.’s character -Tony Stark- can be seen wearing a Black Sabbath T-Shirt… as did a few of the other movie-goers… only wish I had thought it it myself… or that I had a Black Sabbath T-shirt to begin with. (for those who don’t know… Black Sabbath sang “Iron Man” – which was in the first Iron Man movie…)

Bottom line? If you don’t already have plans for this weekend, Grab your honey and go see this movie. NOW. Or – heck – I’m a fan of “dating yourself” so go alone. Grab your popcorn and beverage of choice and sit back and enjoy the show.

And, while you are at it -

Meet #mamavation Mom Finalist – Wendy

Y’all know that Mamavation is near and dear to my heart.  It’s time again for another 7-week boot-camp and voting has already begun in case you didn’t know.  The five finalists are all amazing and remarkable women who would be wonderful if selected.  I can say this as I got the pleasure of talking with each and every one of them – AMAZING conversations.  We laughed… We cried… ok, maybe not cried but there was laughter.

So… When one of the applicant’s asked if I would allow her to guest post here, I was happy to oblige.  I get to meet Wendy for realz in NYC in a couple of weeks but I wanted all of you to have the chance to meet her as well.  You can see all of the Mamavation Mom videos and vote for your favorites – how often do you have the chance to CHANGE SOMEONE’S LIFE?  Do it – (oh yeah… and there may be a chance for you to win the $100 giveaway Wendy is posting but you’ll have to read below for more info)

Without further ado – Here’s Wendy

Hey!  I’m Wendy and I  blog over at WWW.theweightsover.net.  I’ve been writing The Weights Over  since last September when I decided, finally, once and for all I was going to make the changes I needed to make to get healthy and fit.  I was tired of being tired and of being unhealthy. I decided to take a stand for myself, and I did!  I was nearly  a size 28, and about 280 pounds.  I was at my  heaviest, ever, and I knew this went WAY beyond losing weight to look good. I needed to lose weight to LIVE.

I took one of the scariest step (for me) that I  could do.  I signed up for a program at my local gym, and  got started on changing my life!   I started working out and do kinds of exercise that I never thought I ‘d do.  I cried my way through my first ever Spin class…  I learned a lot about weights…and I  started walking.   I started paying attention to my food, and most importantly, I joined the Mamavation Sistahood for support and BOY did I get it!  With Mamavation, there is no judgement, just  people to support you and help you get to where you want to go.  Now it’s time for my next step!  I am a finalist for Mamavation Mom. I am so very excited to hopefully take this next  step and enter this bootcamp  knowing I will be challenged  and  pushed and get to the level that I want to be at!  This is the perfect time for me to be a Mamavtion Mom.

This is my NOW.

There are 5 very worthy women in the running for Mamavation Mom. I relly do think I’m ready, and will be an excellent Mom.   Please vote for me.  I am also host a $100 Paypal Giveaway on my blog: www.theweightsover.nethttp://bit.ly/JpdSyk    Stop by and enter!

Starting over… for the millionth time… #mamavation monday

You wouldn’t know it by my stream updates on Twitter and Facebook (or in the Mamavation Forums) but this roller coaster has GOT to stop.  I go for a period of time where everything is on track and then… like a roller coaster… a STEEP drop to the bottom and I feel like I’m starting all over again.

And I REALLY hate admitting that.

It’s that whole, “I wanna be perfect” issue I’ve dealt with for-evah.

But… I’m NOT perfect… (shocking I know)

and according to those near and dear, being Not Perfect is a perfectly acceptable way to be.

So, over the last few days, I’ve been looking at my world to try to figure out WTH is going on… because this happens to many times to chalk it up to “just another set back” and it boils down to self sabotage.  And excuses.  And allowing the little things in life to completely overwhelm me.

and I’ve come to a conclusion.

There is not one single solitary person in this entire world who will make ME the priority… That’s on my shoulders (as it should be) and I’ve fallen back in the trap of allowing everything else to take precedence… Staying up too late because a friend wants to talk… which then means I’m not getting up early to get my sweat on (even though I KNOW that this is what I need to do because it makes me a MUCH nicer person)… not planning my meals in advance… skipping meals because I’m “too busy” and then eating like there’s no tomorrow because I’m ravenous…

It’s a slippery slope and I KNOW you know what I mean.

So today, I started meal planning again.

I’m going back to the meal plan that Alysa gave me during my reign as a Mamavation Mom.

  • Breakfast – 1 fruit, 1 milk, 2 starch, I fat
  • Morning Snack – 1 fruit, 2 fat
  • Lunch 2 veggies, 1 fruit, 1 FF milk, 2 starch, 2 lean meat, 1 fat
  • Afternoon snack – 1 fruit 2 fat
  • Dinner – 2 veg, 1 ff milk, 2 starch, 3 lean meat, 1 fat

I KNOW that I have to keep my meal plans simple stupid so there will be lots of repetition.  I’m ok with that.  For some of you, variety may be the spice of life and that’s great… for me, I like not having to think too much.

Breakfasts with be either:

  • PB & banana sandwich with glass of milk – 1/2 banana, 1 tbs Natural PB, 2 slices WW toast
  • English muffin with fruit – 1 english muffin is 2 starches, 1 teaspoon of butter, apple slices (with peel) and glass of milk
  • Breakfast smoothie - Smoothie with 8 oz. milk, 2 cup frozen fruit, 1.5 tsp. peanut butter.

Snacks (AM & PM) will be either -

  • grapes and almonds
  • apple slices with Natural PB
  • 2 TBS dried fruit and pecans
  • 2 clementines with almonds

Lunches – Salads.  Made in advance.  Easy breezy – usually a spinach based salad with tomato and cucumber and either egg, leftover meat, or garbanzo beans as the protein.  FF milk will most likely be a greek yogurt. and the starches will come in the way of crackers.  I’ll treat myself to dressing as my fat and employ the “Fork Dip Method” – for those who don’t know, the Fork Dip Method is where your dressing is on the side and you dip your empty fork in the dressing and THEN pick up a bite of the salad.  You get all the flavor but OH SO MUCH less dressing is actually consumed.

Dinner is where more planning is needed.  While it’s NOT ideal for clean eating, I did stock up on Lean Cuisine frozen dinners for those nights when life gets hectic… that and a salad and I’m good to go. add into the mix the occasional night out and it becomes all about portion control.  Yes I have a plan here as well.  When eating out, making smart choices and being like Sally from When Harry Met Sally and not worry about taking 45 minutes to order a sandwich (not the other restaurant scene you dirty birds) you know how Harry pokes fun at her for being High Maintenance?

Harry: (to Sally) You don’t see that? Waiter, I’ll begin with a house salad, but I don’t want the regular dressing. I’ll have the balsamic vinegar and oil, but on the side. And then the salmon with the mustard sauce, but I want the mustard sauce on the side. “On the side” is a very big thing for you.

Yeah… that’s gonna be me – take it or leave it.  Oh – and another “trick” I’ve forgotten about?  asking for the to go box up front.  Yes some may think this is weird, but honestly, out of sight, out of mind.  (also – need to re-watch that movie… it’s a good one)

For nights when I am cooking for one – I’ll plan in advance… as follows

Tonight – Dinner out – see above.  (which works out because I DESPERATELY need to hit the grocery store)

Wednesday – Plans after work so I will plan to bring my dinner with me – something light and simple – and something that can be cold – hmmm… I’ve got it – Salad – spinach, tomato, cucumber, Salmon (for the lean meat), crackers and milk to drink.

Thursday – Boys night :) so I need a crock pot meal as opposed to coming home and cooking – I’m going with a family favorite around here – Alysa’s Crock Pot Chicken and Sweet onions.  Boys LOVE it.  I love it. Paired with a side salad and dinner is done when we get home.

Friday/ Saturday: I have some tentative plans but I’m not sure which day they are falling on… so I have 2 dinner ideas that are interchangeable.  On the night that I have said plans, (I need to check at the store so this might change) I’m planning a Lamb Filet Dinner, side salad, roasted brussel sprouts (or roasted broccoli) and couscous on the side.  On the night that I don’t have plans – I’ll make a version of this EASY Veggie Frittata.

Sunday I’m planning leftovers. I KNOW I’ll have leftover SOMETHING that I’ll need to finish off.

So there’s this week.

The good news is that I’ve done SO MUCH better on my water – Averaging 100+ oz a day. (and living in the bathroom… sorry – TMI)

The other good news is that we are currently in that rare window here in Texas where the weather is GORGEOUS so that inspires me to get back outside.

I’m feeling empowered.  I know I can do this.  I know I have your support.  I also know that every time I stand back up, I’m that much stronger than before.  Food is my biggest hurdle right now.  Starting April 30th, I know that I’m going to be sweating alongside the gals who are the next set of Mamavation Moms so I need to get my act together NOW.

and you know WHY?

Because I’m worth it.

Teach Me – New Ways to Use your Old Favorites

Here it is… Thursday again.  And that means I should share some new tips and tricks that you may or may not already be aware of!  YAY!!!

Last week, we talked about little known features of the iPhone.

Today, let’s talk about something a bit lower on the technology scale.

Have you ever watched Alton Brown’s Good Eats?  One of the key ideas he drilled into me as I watched and learned the “why” behind so many of the things we do in the kitchen was that there should only be ONE item in your kitchen that has single purpose functionality – and THAT should be a fire extinguisher.  Everything else should be a multi-tasker.   As a born multi-tasker myself, this always resonated with me.  Honestly, I’m sad that the series came to an end for MANY reasons, but alas, I digress.

Today, let’s talk a bit about some un-common uses for some pretty common household finds!

Just like last week, some of these may be old hat to you… some may be brand new.  I hope either way something strikes a chord and you have one of those “Why didn’t I think of that” moments. (Clicking on the images will take you to the original sources for these gems of wisdom but don’t worry… it will open a new window so you won’t lose your spot here)

Courtesy of Real Simple

First of all, I have no idea why this never occured to me before… but why NOT use your Bundt Pan as a roaster?  Or using a straw in the ketchup bottle as a way to help get things moving… or using an egg slicer as a mushroom chopper.  Brilliant I say.  Over at Real Simple, they have over 700 various tips and new uses for common items around your house - tips like these and so much more broken down into categories – Cooking, decorating, etc.  Seriously, I could get completely LOST over there…. ok, so I HAVE gotten completely lost over there but it’s good stuff I say.

Next up…

Dryer sheets have gotten a bit of a bad wrap in some circles.  Something about the chemicals and it’s coating power and a potential fire hazard… or something.  I’m not going to discuss the pros and cons of dryer sheets here because I really like my lavender and vanilla laundry as I pull it out of the dryer so I’ll go ahead and live dangerously m’kay?  BUT – did you know that there’s an alternate use for dryer sheets you may not have considered? (I mean aside from the obvious – smoth down hair fly-aways on the really static-y days so you don’t look like you’ve got your hand on a Van de Graaff generator when all you are trying to do is have a good hair day for your interview/date/chance meeting you run into someone important- oh – that’s just me? never mind then.)

That’s right – keep your baseboards clean!  Apparently it helps repel pet hair, dust, etc.  WOO HOO!  Multi-tasker.

Another tip I adore is perfect for planning a birthday party… and it was definitely one of those “Why didn’t I think of that” moments I was talking about.

If you’ve ever planned a child’s birthday party and were serving cake and ice cream and didn’t buy the ridiculously overpriced individual ice cream cups then you know first hand what a mess that can be.  Scooping the ice cream whil impatient kids are waiting… The first scoop is the hardest to get out because the ice cream is still frozen fairly solid but by the time you get to the last child, it’s a goopy mess… and then there’s the arguments about how the first child got less than the last because well, melted ice cream just scoops better… (have I mentioned how glad I am that we are past the children’s birthday ages and now celebrate with just family) What if there was a way to avoid all of that?  Are you ready?

Courtesy of Real Simple

Yep – scoop out ice cream into paper lined cupcake pan and then freeze ahead of time.  No muss… no fuss… and by the time the party starts, it’s one last thing you have to worry about.  And let’s face it… kid’s birthday parties can be a lot like wrangling cats even with the best of prep done ahead of time.

and last but not least, We are coming upon what I like to call “salad season”.  Here in Texas, we really don’t have seasons – it’s hot, hotter, OMG I’m MELTING and Christmas… but when summer hits, the LAST thing I want to do is fire up the stove to make dinner.  So we have salads.  A Lot of salads.  (luckily, my kids love their veggies)

Sometimes though, after a long day, the prep work for a deluxe salad can be overwhelming… until now

Courtesy of the Art of Doing Stuff

A veggie peeler is the PERFECT tool to quickly get very thin and uniform-ish slices of veggies making it the PERFECT salad prep tool (although, I wouldn’t recommend it on tomatoes… that would just be messy).  Onions… Carrots… whatever.

Any of these new to you?  What are some of the uncommon uses for common items that YOU love and adore?

Being Present

Being in the present… easier said than done.  All too often I find myself wrapped up in the past or dreaming of the future and where does that leave me?

In Chaos.

Those who know me, know that, online anyway,  I am “The Handler”… I thrive on being able to fix things… people… whatever.  I take great pleasure in being needed… and yet, I fall into the same trap of projecting my past onto my future.  Well, that’s just silly.

So I’m making an effort to focus ONLY on right now.  This second.  This moment.

Let that sit with you for a second.  Forget the kids clamoring for your attention for 5 seconds.  Take a deep breath.  Listen to your body and hear what it is telling you.

Practice saying yes… and no… depending on what is needed for you at this moment.  Don’t dwell on the mistakes, but instead focus on the lessons learned.

Push outside of “what’s comfortable” and be perfectly ok with the idea that Perfection is something that will drive you CRAZY if you are focused only there.

For those who outside the home… is this situation familiar?  All day at work you are thinking about what needs to be done at home – laundry, taxes, cleaning, what’s for dinner, homework with the kids, date night with someone special… You get the idea.  Then, you get home and your mind is racing with “work stuff” – reports that are due, presentations you have to give, your overflowing inbox on your desk, the emails you didn’t get to today…

No?  Just me? yeah, right…

The point is, my mind at least, is so preoccupied with stuff I can’t control that I forget to take charge of what I CAN control.  Being in the moment.  The right here and now…

And who knows what being present will alter in my world… what about you?  Are you stuck in the yesterdays, tomorrows, maybes, somedays, coulda, woulda, shouldas… What would change in your world if you practiced focusing on the here and now?

Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments section…

#mamavation Monday… on a Tuesday…

Technology hates me lately… My internet at home has been fubar-ed no clue why… and then yesterday, I couldn’t even connect via 3G.  Do you fully understand how FRUSTRATING that is?  Yes – I’m too “plugged in” but seriously – I felt like I was back in the dark ages without access to my blog… facebook… twitter… thank GOODNESS for texting or I would have gone insane.  Seriously insane.  I’m not being dramatic people… you all are my lifeline.

After the latest 2-week challenge, I’ve been a fitness slacker.  There.  I said it.

Mommy-pallooza has drawn to a close and while I LOVE spending time with my boys and we had a blast, I’m ready for some mommy time.  I know… I know… most of you do the whole parenting thing 24/7 so it sounds like I’m a big ol whiny baby but you know how a new mom will look at another new mom with twins and say “Gosh – I don’t know how you do it!” but in all actuality, we get accustomed to our situations no matter what they are?  Well, I got used to being a part time mom… sharing my boys with their dad means that there are days when my world revolves around them and there are days that my world revolves around ME.  It became comfortable… so change that dynamic?  um… yeah… it was interesting.

Don’t get me wrong – my kids are UH-Mazing… seriously.  but last night, when the whole house was quiet (save for the delicate jingle of the bells on the cats collars as they chased each other around like crack monkeys) and I didn’t have anyone else needing anything… it was nice.  until I realized I couldn’t log on for Mamavation TV and then I went into panic mode… THANK GOODNESS I have Megan to pull my arse out of the fire.  Plus, we DID make progress on painting the house…

What’s going to be different this week?  I’m back on track and training for the 5K Mudrun that will be here before I know it.  That means I need to kick my own arse in gear.  So, back to running 3 days a week.  In the morning.  At the butt-crack of dawn.  Yes… I’m just that crazy.

What’s that you say?  You aren’t a runner?  Yeah… me neither.  which is WHY I’m doing this.  I want to push myself to do things that aren’t comfortable. How do you know what you are capable of until you push yourself beyond your own self-imposed limitations and boundaries?  I say screw that – YOU (and I ) are AMAZING and can do anything you set your mind to.  So I’m challenging you… what’s holding you back?  What have you always thought you “Couldn’t” do?

I say let’s make a plan to JUST DO IT! (pretty sure that phrase is trademarked by Nike who has absolutely NO affiliation with this blog and I want to give them proper credit so they don’t like sue me or something)

Wanna know what gives me the strength and knowledge that I can do more than I give myself credit for?  In a word – Mamavation.  Don’t know what Mamavation is? (you must be a new reader – WELCOME!) Mamavation is a community dedicated to obesity prevention & weight loss for women… but more than that, it is a Virtual Sorority of the most amazing women I’ve ever met.  It’s a judgement free zone where we are all cheering each other on as we strive to reach our individual goals.  Right now we are gearing up for the next Mamavation Mom Boot-camp and applications are being accepted so stop procrastinating and jump on in… or at least join us in cheering on the applicants.

As for me – this week’s goals:

  • Begin C25K running plan (again) with 3 days of running this week
  • Drink my 100oz of the good stuff (Meagan – I mean water, woman) again because I’ve been slacking there too
  • Get my sleep patterns back in check

I’ll also figure out why technology is hating me so much lately but not tonight.  Tonight… I have a date :)

Teach Me – iPhone Tips and Tricks

I love learning new things and figuring out how stuff works.

I’m a “tinker-er” and love to just get in there and fix stuff… or learn how stuff works. I’m convinced that I’m the one person who ACTUALLY reads instruction manuals, owners manuals, etc.

Yep… I’m weird. and if you are just NOW figuring that out, you must be new here so let me point you to the upper right hand column where you can find out all the different ways you can stalk me – I mean learn more about me and follow along for the off-kilter randomness.

Back to the point.

I’ve recently run across some pretty amazing tips and tricks that were new to me and would perhaps be new to you as well. You could hunt and peck through my Pinterest Tips and Tricks board of course, but I figured… for the next few weeks at least… I’d highlight a few for you to save you time and energy. You’re Welcome :)

Those who know me, know that I am A-D-D-I-C-T-E-D to my iPhone. Seriously need a 12-step program… I’m what you might call TOO connected… so when I came across a post of 40 “secret” iPhone Features… I KNEW it would be a great fit for this little post.

20120404-144635.jpg

Some of these I already knew… For example – I already have the free Emoji app and anyone who has an iPhone and receives texts from me has seen the not-so occasional emoticon smiley pop up.  For the emoticon lover, this is a gold-mine full of pages and pages of symbols.  The downside, is that only people with an iPhone can see them, but hey – you can’t win them all.

I also was familiar with other features – how to Turn on Caps Lock and how to save images – as you can tell if you follow me on Facebook.

HOWEVER – TONS of the tips here were brand spankin new to me.  For example…

Did you know that you can set your flash for alerts?  Handy…

Did you know that you can see your calendar a week at a time?  Also handy…

Did you know that you can take a picture using the ‘volume up’ button?  HELLO… HANDY!

And there’s a ton more on the list.

So, IF you have an iPhone… even if you think you know EVERYTHING about it, I highly encourage you to review the list for yourself.  You might just learn a thing or two that you didn’t already know!

40 “secret” iPhone Features

Wisdom and movies…

Ok, so I don’t REALLY… not yet. but I have an affinity for movie quotes. and while there are those who can speak far more fluently, I thought I’d share some epiphany moments derived by movie quotes as of late… You’re welcome.

What REALLY got me thinking about this was the fact that the boys and I have watched NUMEROUS movies over the last few weeks… you know, dinner’s done, dishes in the dishwasher, “quality” time… and while some of the movies we watched were clearly smack dab in what I lovingly refer to as “kid movies” (and yes, those are stored in the kids rooms because to add them to my collection would be obscene) some were not… I love that my boys are mature enough to handle PG-13 movies and for the most part, we have similar tastes in movies… Ok, I’m not breaking out the Rom-Coms but you know what I mean. It’s a good feeling to be able to jointly enjoy a movie. That’s all I’m trying to say. AND… on movie nights, even though they get to pick, mommy-veto power is still in full force… On to the wisdom…

From Batman Begins: Thomas Wayne speaking to his son -

“And why do we fall, Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.”

This was repeated throughout the movie… and this weekend gave me lots of opportunities to remind my boys. “Why do we fall?” and I don’t mean just physically – we fall all the time (unless we just aren’t trying anything new…) physically, metaphorically, whatever. And the rest of the quote “so we can learn to pick OURSELVES back up”. That’s not to say that we shouldn’t ask for help… but learning to pick ourselves back up… to find our own inner strength… THAT is empowering…

And from the Batman himself -

“It’s not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.”

Yes… Actions DO speak louder than anything we could say… speak louder than how we look… ACTIONS are all that matters…

Another fine family movie night pick wrought with wisdom (and a favorite of my youngest)

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

Annabeth Chase: [leaning in as if to kiss Percy, then swiping his sword]

“First rule of battle strategy. Don’t ever let your opponent distract you.”

Ahhh yes… Life may not always be a battlefield, but it can be said that when you have a goal, you can not let the “haters” distract you. Because after all, aren’t they the opponents?

Chiron: “Keep moving! Keep moving! Don’t lose interest! One foot in front of the other and the next thing you know, you’re running!”

Yep – that’s all it takes. You have a goal – one that may seem impossible to some… and yet, you just keep on moving – keep putting one foot in front of the other and before you know it, you are running…

And a recent family outing to the Hunger Games brought forth this gem from Peeta Mellark:

“I just keep wishing I could think of a way to show them that they don’t own me. If I’m gonna die, I wanna still be me. “

Yes… because after all, we are all in circumstances that seem controlling… we may feel as if we are just cogs in a big giant machine. but what we ALWAYS have control over is HOW we react. How we respond. and HOW we can stay true to ourselves. That one little line afforded me the opportunity to have a real, honest, deep discussion with my boys on the way home.

We talked about what Peeta meant by that line and the youngest decided he meant that “The capitol could take away a lot of things but couldn’t force them to act different.”

True son… very true. So in looking at your circumstances… how we react to them is what REALLY defines us… and lucky for us, we have complete control over it.

Do you have any favorite movie lessons with your family? I can’t wait to hear about them!

Coffee with friends

Coffee… without it, I get a little stabby… It’s how I start my day after a morning workout… It’s what I enjoy with my friend Jessica where we catch up on each other’s lives (ok, in all honesty, it’s usually me filling her in on me while she patiently listens)… It’s also been (lately) the promising first date because let’s face it, coffee is easy… no commitment.  if you don’t hit it off, you aren’t sitting through an awkward dinner.

On the mornings when I’m running on fumes and 3-4 hours of sleep, you might see me joke mention the need for a Coffee IV.  yep.  I do love my coffee.

And I’m not alone!  YAY.

So my dear darling friend Leah started a post about how Bloggers need their coffee and included some amazing bloggers that I appreciate with their favorite cup ‘o joe.  That inspired Janice to talk about how SHE enjoys her morning coffee.  And also inspired the fantastic Krista to write about Bloggers on caffeine because let’s face it, a LOT of us function better when drugged up caffeinated.

Since Krista tagged me, I’ll play along.  Because it’s fun so WHY NOT!!!

Here’s how to play…

1) Take a picture of yourself enjoying your morning cup of coffee/tea/hot water/protein smoothie/juice etc and post it to your blog.
2) Tag a few of your favourite bloggers and ask them to play along

Easy enough, right?

So, here’s me… this morning…

I started the coffee pot before I went out for my morning run so it would be hot and fresh when I got back.

Yes, I’m sporting my “I  ❤ Edward” Bondi Band which does wonders for keeping the flyaways from getting in my eyes.

Yes, I’m sweating like a pig glowing  because even at 4:30 this morning it was 75 degrees out and H-U-M-I-D.

Yes, there is a window behind me and it is still dark out… because yes, I get up at the butt-crack of dawn.

Yes, that cup is HUGE.

and yes – you may be noticing that this is one of those RARE occasions where my nails are NOT painted *gasp* but my manicure was ruined with the housework from the weekend and I haven’t re-done them… although that will be corrected this evening because now that my nails are growing again, they deserve to be polished and pretty.

So, now it’s your turn.  I want to hear from ALL of you about your morning coffee, but since I have to tag a few of you (and my definition of a few is… well, a lot lol ) here goes:

(1) Brittany – @CajunBrittinAtxLESSBRITT & MORELIFE

(2) Julie – @dutchbeingmeDutch Being Me

#mamavation monday – shifting gears

Hello everyone. It’s monday… again… and if you saw my Facebook status earlier, you know my Monday is off to a bangin’ start…

But… then I hopped over to Pinterest… and saw this…

Interesting… so… change our thoughts and we can change the world… or our world at least, right? (more on that to come later this week)

So, let’s start over – GOOD MORNING MONDAY!

it’s a start…

This past weekend marked the end of “Mommy-Palooza” which, if you don’t know, was the month of Solo-parenting… most of the time, I share my boys with their dad, so I am a part-time parent.  That means that I have days where it’s just me and I can take care of errands or “house-stuff” so that when I DO have my boys, it’s all about them… it’s an arrangement I have gotten used to and while I miss them when they aren’t there, I also treasure my Mommy time alone… this past month, the ex was out of the country… so I was 100% mommy… and still had all those blasted errand and house stuff and workouts I had to fit in somehow.  Hence, getting up somewhere between o’ dark thirty and the butt-crack of dawn.  And for those who know me, you KNOW this is a HUGE change… because I was, once-upon-a-time the Midnight workout queen… the days not over till my workout is done…

Are you sitting down?  I actually have gotten to where I’m WAY off kilter (more than normal) when I miss mymorning sweat session… I know!  crazy isn’t it?  It’s actually a good thing.  Summer is almost here in Texas… and with the 90 degree days this weekend, I’m thankful for the switch in my routine… even in the heat of the summer, the mornings are still usually tolerable even if it’s still blazing hot at 8-9:00 at night.

Anyway, back to my “mommy-palooza” discussion… First of all – I’m not trying to be a big ol whiney baby.  I KNOW tons of you who do this 24/7 whether you are officially a single parent or not.  My point is simply that I don’t.

I had actually gotten into a rhythm with my boys… just as it was ending… and HOW do I know that I had gotten into a rhythm?  because I did NOT flip out when my youngest accidentally burned up the power washer hose costing $70 to replace and I did NOT flip out when my oldest decided to help prime the fresh wood on the back of the house in his fairly new blue jeans.  In both cases, as I could see the fear and tears in their eyes, I took a deep breath and said – “it’s ok.  accidents happen… and now we know what to do differently next time.”  My mom is STILL in shock at my reaction… my mom – who I love dearly – would have KILLED us kids if that had happened… of course she praised me for being so calm and level headed… to which I reminded her that screaming and yelling wouldn’t have fixed anything… progress… cuz, I kinda have a bit of a temper… (shocking, I know)

In fact, because I didn’t yell and scream and make the boys feel worse than they already did, they both decided that they could help pay for the mistakes by doing extra chores around the house… ON THEIR OWN.  without prompting… WOW… I was in shock over that… but my “flower bed” (and I use that term VERY loosely) is now weed-free and the staples that proliferated the roof line of the house are all gone…and I have a promise of lawn mowing this next Friday when the boys are out of school… Somewhere along the way, the boys learned that when you break/damage/ruin something, someone has to pay to fix/replace it… and since they can’t go out and get jobs (cause you know the whole child-labor thing is frowned upon) they decided that the next best thing would be to help around the house to earn money… hmmm…   And, on Sunday, I made sure to pick out “painting clothes” for the boys so we didn’t have any more issues… and, well, we were done power washing for the weekend, so there’s that…

Other cool stuff?  My dear wonderful friend Leah posted something so emotionally raw that it was powerful… it was a confession of sorts about where she’s been mentally…

It inspired me to post this little diddy about NOT being Super-mom and the subsequent “confessional” because come on… sometimes, ranting, whining, complaining, whatever, allows you to get things off your chest so you can release the negativity and move on to more positive endeavors… AND, there’s a level of anonymity with the confessional… each week, I’ll share some of the contributions WITHOUT names so that we can help support those who need it.  My hope is that if you “confess” you’ll come back, see the support from myself and others, and feel empowered.  we’ll see how that goes… although, since it IS anonymous, I won’t be able to say HEY YOU – come back and read what others wrote!!! so, just stay tuned m’kay?

Also, y”all KNOW I love me some coffee, right?  Well, it started with Leah (aka @bookieboo) and her post about how bloggers LOVE their coffee… which then was turned into something bigger… Janice (@fitcheerldr) started a meme about coffee… and my dear friend Krista (@kristalswan) jumped on it tagging me… so at some point this week, I’ll manage to work my camera before the first cup of coffee is complete and join in on the fun :)

All in all, I feel like I’m ready to tackle this week – hopefully :)
