It’s Monday and that means (for me anyway) a fresh start for the week. Â With “Back to School” right around the corner – for both the boys and for me – it’s time to really look at our schedules and make sure we are being efficient. Â This week’s Mamavation Monday Prompt REALLY got me thinking…
Question: What qualities do you look for in a healthy breakfast? Any go-to breakfast recommendations for a busy mom?
Well if that isn’t something to think about… Usually, “Healthy” and my frantic schedule don’t mesh.  Then I thought about how I try to make lunches the night before… why couldn’t the same be said for Breakfast?  Of course, making a bowl of cereal the night before would probably end up with some less than desirable results… (ewwwwww!)
But is a bowl of cereal really the best breakfast?
According to Livestrong.com,”A healthy breakfast consists of carbohydrates for energy, protein for muscle coordination and fiber for healthy digestion.” Â It doesn’t say you HAVE to eat Breakfast type foods for Breakfast… and truth be told, I’m a big fan of Breakfast for Dinner (Brinner)… so, if Breakfast for Dinner is acceptable, is Dinner for Breakfast ALSO acceptable? Â (and would it be called Dinfast?)
So here are some orthodox and some un-orthodox Breakfast ideas to chew on (pardon the pun)
- Wrap a whole-grain tortilla around peanut butter and banana and serve with low-fat milk– Great for breakfast on the go
- Celery and sliced apple with peanut butter – also makes for a yum-tastic snack during the day
- Whole-Wheat Toast with smoked salmon and capers – ok, I may be a bit weird but I LOVE smoked salmon… my co-workers, not so much. Â This one HAS to be eaten BEFORE work…
- Oatmeal with pumpkin and cinnamon – Â I know this sounds strange, but I love mixing roasted or baked pumpkin or butternut squash or sweet potato into my Quaker Oats oatmeal in the winter – just tastes warm and cozy.
- Smoothies-Â When we are really in a bind, this is a quick and easy way to get some protein (and … um veggies.. don’t tell!) into my kids in the morning because you can throw whatever is handy into the blender and drink it on the way to work & School
So I’m curious… what are some of your favorite Breakfast ideas?  This is a judgement free zone, so share your most unusual!  I wanna know 🙂
Another great thing about Monday is the chance to chat with the fantastic Mamavation Moms on Mamavation TV!

I’m picturing you porting a big hotel of flakes at 2am and up by 6am to eat it, lol. Thanks for the great dinner type ideas. I might try a few. Thanks sweets!
I’m an oatmeal girl and sometimes I change it up with oat bran, not terribly different, but I like it with organic sugar. 🙂
I’m really enjoying reading posts this week. I’m getting so many new ideas for breakfast foods. My daughter is one who doesn’t care for breakfast foods in the morning. She is on a PB&J kick. For over a week straight now she has had PB&J, carrots, and either apples or banana. She sticks with what she likes.
I need to go grocery shopping and whole wheat tortillas are on the list. I want to try the banana, peanut butter wrap!
Thank you for all the great ideas
I am a total oatmeal girl. My favorite is banana-walnut and I stir in a half a teaspoon or so of natural peanut butter. Yum.
Those are some good breakfast ideas! I’m a classic “over easy eggs with a pc of toast” kinda gal, which really doesn’t work during the week once school starts.
I wish I could make the Twitter chat tonight, but I have unbreakable plans. Next time for sure!
I adore a good veggie scramble with fresh eggs… Whatever is feeling lonely in the veggie drawer with eggs and a bit of cheese. I have also been known to have leftovers for breakfast… weird? No. When I lived abroad it was more “normal” than eating breakfast foods in the morning.
Have a great week!
I love peanut butter so I have to try the peanut butter and banana wrap. I have to admit that before I used to skip breakfast, so the ideas you are giving are wonderful to keep me on track. Thank you
