Love is in the air

Today is Valentine’s Day. For some it is a day of expectations. For some it is a day of sadness. For me it is a day to celebrate.

I’m not one to get all wrapped up in the commercialism. I would rather have someone do something special for me out of true desire than have someone do something out of obligation. If you know me at all, you know that store bought roses don’t hold a candle to hand picked daisies. I think that the worst possible way to spend Valentine’s Day is in a crowded restaurant with all the other couples who are celebrating their adoration for each other. I’d rather surround myself with people who appreciate me and my quirks every day of the year than spend time with someone who reserves his affection for a holiday that tells him that he should do something grand. I’m not saying that you and your significant other shouldn’t go to dinner or exchange gifts- to each his own.

I know… I sound cynical. That doesn’t mean I don’t love Valentine’s Day. I mean how could you not appreciate a day centered around love.  Love is a beautiful thing.  True love.  Uncomplicated love.  Complete adoration for those in your life who make an impact.

Today I’m taking this opportunity to spread love whenever and wherever I can.

Telling friends how and why you appreciate them is just as important as telling a partner that you love them.

Taking time to do something nice for yourself is more important to your relationships and families because of you aren’t taking care of yourself, how can you take care of anyone else? Their is a reason Flight attendants tell you to put your oxygen mask on first after all.

Love yourself. Because if you don’t love yourself, it isn’t possible to love anyone else. That’s something that took me 30-something years to figure out.

And in the spirit of sharing love… If you are reading this, I love you. Each and every one of you. You allow me to share my world with you. You celebrate my victories. You support me in my trials. You are important whether we’ve met in real life or not. Knowing you are here makes me realize that I am never truly alone- even in the darkest days.

I am thankful for that. That and so much more.

Happy Valentine’s Day. Know that whether you are in a romantic relationship or not, you are adored and appreciated.
