It’s hard to make plans when you have no clue what might unfold tomorrow… That’s the game I’m playing right now. Having to make plans… and then planning for contingencies. Planning a trip… and knowing that we can cancel last minute. Making plans with friends… and realizing that sometimes life happens…
I feel very fortunate that I’m surrounded by people who are extremely patient with me as I navigate these rough and choppy waters while blindfolded and my hands are tied behind my back. People who (at least out loud) don’t complain about my flakiness and tentative plans and simply love me for where I’m at.
Even knowing that tomorrow is uncertain, that can’t stop us from looking out at the horizon… things that are yet to come… things we are building towards and striving to accomplish.
The Giant is most anxious to get to the horizon. There are so many things he wants… and like most teens, he wants them RIGHT. NOW. So… Teaching Patience is important… which sucks as I’m not exactly a patient person…
Andplusalso… I’m a believer of being “In the moment…” believing that if you don’t appreciate what you have and where you are, you won’t appreciate anything to come. So how do you reconcile those two ideas? Being in the moment and working towards that which lies on the horizon?
We have always held to the hope, the belief, the conviction that there is a better life, a better world, beyond the horizon.
~Franklin D. Roosevelt
It’s a delicate balance… not only for myself but also to teach to the gentlemen I’m working hard to raise. Teaching that yes, a better life MIGHT lie beyond the horizon… but only when you take responsibility for the life you live and the choices you make.
We are in control of our lives right here and now… but also the life we can choose to build.
And for my Giant, who I love so dearly, remembering that there can be rainbows at the end of the grey and stormy skies and while we seem to be blindfolded and helpless at times, every choice is leading us to that better life. The one that just lies beyond the horizon.
