This past week was AGAIN a flurry of activity and when it got closer to the weekend, I was looking forward to some well deserved R & R…. not that that actually HAPPENED, but I was looking forward to it.
Instead, I got to cheer my babies in their efforts with the Colin’s Hope Triathlon. Colin’s Hope raises water safety awareness to prevent children from drowning. You can read more about Colin’s Story and how you can help this worthy organization should you feel so moved by checking out their web page, but suffice it to say, they are absolutely an amazing organization.
The boys had a blast and did a tremendous job in the event – The giant finished 4th and Mini-me finished 10th – both improved from past entries in this tri and I couldn’t be prouder. Even more remarkable, the Giant finished second for his time in the swim leg of the race and as that’s truly his passion, he was beaming. Both of my boys run under 9 min miles… and as a self-proclaimed NOT A RUNNER, that always amazes me…
Afterwards, I went out to see my bestie Evin from Food Good Laundry Bad at the Mueller’s Farmer’s Market. That was a new market for me as I normally stick closer to home, but hey – since I was apparently making a gigantic loop around the Austin area, I figured why not!
Still managed to get to the gym after such a full Sunday so I have to say that Sunday was by far my favorite day of the week – productive plus I got to share parts of my day with some of my favorite peoples.
Plus? All of that activity made it even easier to hit my step goals!
All in all, it was quite perfect way to wrap up a busy week.
As for the rest of the “healthier me” journey… There are, of course, ups and downs… days that I feel like every choice I make leads me to my desired end result… then there are days when I basically say fuck it all.
That’s normal right? I mean we can’t be perfect all the time. It’s like the 80/20 rule… I do love the 80/20 rule sometimes… 80% of what I eat and the fitness I do leads me where I want to be… the other 20% keeps me sane… so, if I want to have, hypothetically speaking, a grilled cheese sandwich and fritos, I’m good with that… knowing that the occasional bad decision isn’t going to completely derail my plans because I have a bajillion other choices each day to make up for it. The trick though is to be mindful of just how often we are making said bad decisions…
So far, the scale is agreeing with my choices and I’m down another 2.2 lbs this week for a total over the last 3 weeks of 7 lbs! There’s still a long way to go, but it’s a fantastic start. Slow and steady people… I sometimes find myself having to remind my inner demons that I didn’t get to this point overnight and I’m not going to get where I want to be overnight either. That’s true in life too…
We live in such an immediate gratification world with IMs, text, email, etc that it can be hard to remember back to the days where if you wanted to tell someone something, you had to wait for them to get home or mail them a letter. MAIL. Like 3 days later they would get what you sent. As connected as I am, I sometimes miss those days where we had an appreciation for putting forth the effort for the “things” worth having. I encounter far too many people in my professional career alone that have forgotten that it’s the effort that makes the difference. A phrase that keeps popping into my mind is that “Nothing worth having is easy.” I think that applies to so many areas of life… with the exception of friendships… So many of those in my world are, in fact, easy. For that I’m thankful.
I’ve rambled enough – let’s move on…
While the weight is steadily dropping and that makes me happy, I’m thinking it is really time to incorporate weights to my gym time. Weights scare me. I don’t know what to do really… don’t know that I know enough to do anything meaningful without causing myself harm… so that’s my goal this week. To figure out the best way to add in strength training to my routine.
Cardio is important after all, but strength training is needed to reshape my body, increase metabolism (we all know that muscle burns calories right?), and to help me feel better about how I look naked… because let’s be honest, I’m doing this for a multitude of health reasons, but if I ignore the fact that I want to look better naked, I’m fooling myself.
Still struggling to hit 10K steps a day… so that is staying on my list of goals. The water is necessary but I’m not having any issues with that… (you’d think that bathroom trips alone would get me to my 10K steps but sadly, no)
Now that the weather has cooled a touch, it’s time to get back out there in the mornings and tackle a morning wog (that’s a combo of walking and jogging folks)
- Start each day with a wog around the neighborhood
- Track steps, aiming for 10K
- 100oz water per day
- Workout 4 times this week
- Figure out what the hell to do with those heavy things at the gym
This next week is looking to be busy again and the boys schedules are insane next weekend – not sure if I’m going to see them AT ALL to be honest… Between Debate and Swimming and Birthday parties… that’s part of growing up I suppose.
How about you? How was your week? What are you working on?
Cheering you on! I agree with the immediate gratification issue. We’re working on that in this house, too!
🙂

I’m also trying to get myself healthier and drinking more water is also on my list. I can totally relate to the bathroom trips 😉
Why not try starting out with some body weight exercises? That’s the next thing I’m going to incorporate- push ups, squats, lunges, wall sits, etc. I’ve got plenty of weight on me to make it well worth the effort!
but those aren’t fun….. I’m kidding. I’m actually meeting with a friend at the gym tonight to walk through some machines and such. It will be…. interesting.
