Freedom in Art

I saw this amazing sculpture on Facebook yesterday and was moved beyond measure.  Yes, I’ve been working through some things that have left me in moments of “crazy” but each day I have more and more moments of strength.  Being a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, I also believe that we hear, see, read, experience things at exactly the moment we need to.

Ever been driving down the road an a song comes on the radio or your ipod and it’s exactly what you needed to hear at that exact moment?  That’s how this sculpture hits me.  You can read about the artists vision for this piece but I’d like to share my thoughts on it.

It doesn’t matter where you are in life or where you’ve been, I think you can relate to the first image.  We are bound by earthly things and emotions – fear, anxiety, the “unknown”, whatever.  It paralyzes us like the statue where we are surviving but not really living.  Think about your own life for a moment – what do you NOT do because something is holding you back?  It could be your own self confidence that has you captive or your weight or a family situation.  Once you identify what it is holding you back, you can start to move to the second image in the sculpture.  you begin to break free but the ties keep you grounded.  You know there is something more but you are still working towards cutting the negativity (because ultimately everything holding you back from perfection is a form of fear or negativity).

As your continue to do “The Work” – call it whatever you want – and you begin to see what you can become, you gain more confidence, strength, freedom until the day when you can truly let go of the negative forces keeping you bound and then you become free.  Beautiful.

In case you are wondering, I’m at the 3rd section right now.  I have more freedom than before but am still working on cutting loose the fears and insecurities that have me back.  I think most of us are in one of the first 3 places and I’m super excited about finally achieving the freedom that is so eloquently depicted here.

What about you?  What has you frozen?  What ties do you need to work through?  How will you achieve the freedom you deserve?

Awesome sculpture. I’ve just recently decided to become a writer full-time and am experiencing similar feelings. What is holding me back and what will let me be free? Thanks for posting.

  3. This is SO awesome! Thanks for sharing, Shelley!

Love it. I can’t stop looking at it and thinking about it. Amazing.

  5. This is absolutely gorgeous. Really makes a statement and I think everyone will take some different from it.

  6. I saw this picture a couple of weeks ago on failblog, and I thought is was really cool, but I didn’t put much thought into it. It’s interested that you got so much out of it. I think you know the binds that hold me back from total freedom, and I’m working everyday to try to break out, just as the 3rd statue. It’s a slow process, but no one promised it would be fast and easy.

Now that I think about it, I may still be in that 2nd stage.
