The Help- Opening August 10th 2011

I think sometimes I live under a rock.  Prior to about a week ago, I had not heard of the Dreamworks movie, the Help.  I had not read the book (even though it was on the New York Time’s Best-seller list for 103 weeks and held the number 1 spot for six of those…) and I’m one of those that fast forwards through commercials.

In a way perhaps, that is a good thing.  I had absolutely no preconceived notions about the movie.  I had no idea what the story line was about and no idea what to expect.

I assumed it was a light-hearted movie and when I was given the opportunity to join some of my favorite people for an advance screening during BlogHer, I thought it would be a fun, relaxing time with friends… and I was half right.

The story itself was clearly well written and approaches topics we glossed over in our junior high history classes – true inequality that once seemed so ‘normal’ for lack of a better word.  Scenes within the movie were almost unbelievable because I can’t imagine the mindsets depicted, and yet they were portrayed with such passion and integrity that the audience was moved beyond words.

I have only two words for those of you wanting to see the movie – Bring Tissues.  Several times the entire theater was silent save for the sniffles echoing throughout the crowd.

the Help opens everywhere August 10th and I highly recommend you gather your friends (the ones who don’t mind if you blubber like a baby) and make a day of it.  this is one of those rare films that I not only enjoyed immensely, but it left me wanting to read the book as soon as I can get my hands on a copy.  (Not to mention I’m adding the DVD to this years Christmas list. )

Speaking of reading, this would be an ideal selection for your next Book Club.  Here are some fantastic ideas on how to really bring the book to life, complete with recipes for treats and drinks inspired by the movie. While you are at it, go ahead and ‘Like’ the Help Movie on FaceBook and join the discussion on Twitter – just follow #thehelpmovie hashtag!

Disclosure – I was invited to attend a pre-screening of the movie and encouraged to provide an honest review of my experience.
